Programme Areas of RDF

1. Food Security, Livelihood, Skills and Economic Empowerment :

The RDF programme is specifically designed to enhance food security, livelihoods, skills development, and economic empowerment among vulnerable populations, with a special emphasis on girls, women, and children who face distinct challenges. This program incorporates multiple areas: it increases environmentally sustainable agriculture by employing technology to boost productivity; increases broader economic growth; and provides skills development and awareness training to equip individuals for new opportunities. Ensuring market access is essential for the participants to profitably sell their goods and services, supported further by financial assistance such as asset transfers and small credit funds for starting income-generating activities. Additionally, the programme incorporates microfinance for small businesses and an Entrepreneurship Development Scheme aimed at nurturing business insight and opportunities. The primary objectives are to empower women socially and economically, advance gender equality, and establish a respectful and inclusive society. This comprehensive approach addresses immediate economic needs and also aims for enduring societal transformation, underscoring RDF’s dedication to holistic and lasting empowerment.

2. . Resilience to Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction :

The thematic programme of RDF also focuses on Climate Change Adaptation, about initiatives to aware communities of climate change and its impacts on their lives. This entails preparation for natural disasters, enhancing agricultural production, and facilitating recovery post-hazards. Emphasizing strong community participation, the programme seeks to identify and implement community-based solutions for adapting to climate change. This effort is in line with the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP).

Central to RDF’s strategy is the utilisation of solar energy. The initiatives include the installation of Solar Rooftop Systems, Solar Irrigation Pumping Systems, and Solar Street Lighting Systems.

Additionally, the programme covers “Community-Based Climate Change Adaptation”, “Disaster Risk Reduction”, and the advancement of climate-smart agriculture. Furthermore, RDF is committed to ensuring gender transformation and inclusion within its Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction programme.

3. Emergency Response:

As an organization situated in the southern coastal region, RDF is committed to providing comprehensive emergency support to vulnerable coastal populations before, during, and after any emergencies. Recognizing the increased risks faced by certain populations, RDF places a particular emphasis on prioritizing support for women, children, and girls during this critical situation.

To enhance its emergency response capabilities, RDF is dedicated to nurturing partnerships with donors, private sectors, foundations and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs). These collaborations are essential for mobilizing resources, sharing expertise, and extending the reach of relief efforts. A notable ongoing partnership with Plan International Bangladesh exemplifies RDF’s strategy. This relationship will be further strengthened to ensure a robust support system that can swiftly and effectively respond to crises.

By strengthening cooperative efforts and focusing on the most at-risk groups, RDF aims to build a resilient framework for disaster management, ensuring that the needs of the most vulnerable population are met promptly and effectively during times of crisis. This approach enhances immediate response and also contributes to the long-term recovery and stability of the affected communities.

4. Child Rights, Ending Child Marriage, Education, Health, Nutrition and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR):

RDF is dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and their families through initiatives in education, health, nutrition, and income generation. The child rights program specifically aims to ensure primary education for all children and secondary education for girls. A significant emphasis is placed on nutrition and the eradication of child marriage.

The program also includes a focus on “Empowering Adolescent Girls and Youth with Life Skills and Employable Technical Skills Development”. This involves Gender Transformative Activities, which engage males and advocate for female education up to at least grade 12, helping to combat Early and Forced Marriage, foster Girls’ Leadership Development, address Gender-Based Violence, facilitate Productive Asset Transfer, and increase awareness of Reproductive Health & Rights.

The primary goals of this component are to enhance Good Health and Well-being and to improve Gender Equity and Inclusiveness. Additionally, RDF provides employable skills training and conducts training for its organizational staff, including social research. The organization runs the Training and Research Center (RTRC) staffed with specialist trainers.

5. Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

RDF’s thematic programme on WASH is devoted to improving health outcomes and quality of life by enhancing access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene practices in underserved communities both rural and slum areas. Recognizing the critical interlinkages between WASH and public health, the programme strategically targets interventions in rural and urban settings that lack adequate infrastructure. By collaborating with local government bodies, NGOs, and community leaders, RDF’s efforts are oriented towards constructing and rehabilitating water supply systems, promoting safe sanitation facilities, and conducting widespread hygiene education campaigns. These efforts are crucial for preventing waterborne diseases, supporting education, and enhancing socioeconomic development, thereby contributing significantly to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). The programme also incorporates innovative technologies and sustainable practices to ensure the longevity and resilience of WASH infrastructures against environmental challenges.

6. Cross-cutting programme: Gender Transformation, Disability Inclusion and Locally-led Initiatives:

The RDF’s programme prioritises an integrated approach to gender transformation, disability inclusion, and locally-led initiatives across its varied sectors. These foundational concepts are incorporated into all programmes, ensuring that every initiative – from food security and livelihoods to resilience against climate change and emergency responses – is up-to-date by a commitment to equity and local empowerment. By embedding these cross-cutting themes, RDF ensures that interventions in areas such as child rights, health, and WASH address immediate needs and also increase inclusive, sustainable communities. This approach recognizes the inherent link between gender equity, engagement of persons with disabilities, and local leadership in driving effective and long-lasting change.
